Part of the Royal Family Series. An elepidote, medium growing Rhododendron. 2 1/2″ wavy flowers are purplish-pink with dark red spotting, fading to lighter pink as they mature. Blooms late midseason, in trusses of 14 flowers. Green leaves are coated with orange-yellow indumentum. Grows 3′ high by 4′ wide in a 10 year period.

Origin

Hybrid seedling Rhododendron 'King Tut' and Rhododendron degronianum ssp yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada'. Introduced by Anthony M. Shammarello of Ohio in 1960.

Special Notes

Exposure: Morning Sun, afternoon shade or all day filtered light. Protect from the hot mid-day sun. Protect from the prevailing winter winds, plant in a sheltered location.

Soil: A very acidic, moist but well draining soil is required. Avoid heavy compacted soils such as clay.

Maintenance: Selective pruning right after flowering in done. Dead-heading is recommended for increased flower production the following year.
