Pinus densiflora ‘Tanyosho’
Japanese Red Pine - Tanyosho
A fascinating semi-dwarf upright umbrella-shaped Japanese Red Pine. Often referred to as the “Table Top Pine” as more mature specimens will feature prominent growth towards the top while leaving its multi-stem bottom branches completely bare mimicking the legs of a table. Bark exfoliates with age exposing reddish-brown blotches. As well, it’s small pine cones cluster tightly together unlike any other pine. Dark green needles. Grows 4′ to 5′ high and wide in a 10 year period.

Parentage unknown. First recorded from Japan in 1890 by H. Mayr of Germany.

Special Notes
Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun or all day indirect/filtered light. Plant in a protected area out of the prevailing winds, as being exposed in winter winds can lead to desiccation.
Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.
Maintenance: Candling is done to new spring shoots before the needles fully emerge.
