Pinus densiflora ‘Oculus Draconis’
Japanese Red Pine - Dragon's Eye
A large growing broad upright Japanese Red Pine with an irregular flat top crown. Probably the most well known variegated form of the species. Two yellow bands on each needle are alternated by green. When viewed from above, it looks like an eye of a dragon. Grows 10′ high by 5′ wide in a 10 year period.

Parentage unknown. First recorded from Japan in 1890 by H. Mayr of Germany.

Special Notes
Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun or all day indirect/filtered light. Plant in a protected area out of the prevailing winds, as being exposed in winter winds can lead to desiccation.
Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.
Maintenance: Candling is done to new spring shoots before the needles fully emerge.
