Japanese Red Pine - Burke's Red Variegated

A large growing conical Japanese Red Pine with variegated needles. Yellow-green needles feature bright yellow-white bands. During the winter, needles can occasionally turn reddish-brown. The intensity of the variegation can depend on seasonal and local weather temperatures. Grows 10′ high by 8′ wide in a 10 year period.

Origin

Discovered by Joe Burke of New York as a seedling of Pinus densiflora 'Oculus Draconis' in the late 1980's. Original plant was suppose to have a red band in addition to the yellow band. However, this variegation never stayed.

Special Notes

Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun or all day indirect/filtered light. Plant in a protected area out of the prevailing winds, as being exposed in winter winds can lead to desiccation.

Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.

Maintenance: Candling is done to new spring shoots before the needles fully emerge.
