Rhododendron ‘Polarnacht’
Rhododendron - Polar Night
An elepidote, medium growing Rhododendron. 2 1/3″ to 3″ flowers are near black in bud and open dark purple with an even darker blotch. Blooms late midseason in trusses of 12-14 flowers. Compact, grows 3′ high by 6′ wide in a 10 year period.

Origin
Hybrid seedling of Rhododendron 'Turkana' and Rhododendron 'Purple Splendour'. Introduced by Hans Hachmann of Germany in 1976.
Special Notes
Exposure: Morning Sun, afternoon shade or all day filtered light. Protect from the hot mid-day sun. Protect from the prevailing winter winds, plant in a sheltered location.
Soil: A very acidic, moist but well draining soil is required. Avoid heavy compacted soils such as clay.
Maintenance: Selective pruning right after flowering in done. Dead-heading is recommended for increased flower production the following year.
