Japanese Maple - Cluster of Clouds

A most intriguing Japanese Maple variety not usually seen. Some might call it a more subdued ‘Ukigumo’. New spring leaves emerge bright pink, almost white in colour with some hints of orange. The leaves turn to a more pale green, however, they are dusted in thousands of very fine white dots given it an almost translucent effect. The intensity of this seems to vary year to year based on environmental conditions. Fall colours include yellows and oranges. Upright, growing 7′ high by 3′ wide in a 10 year period.

Parentage unknown.

Exposure: Part Sun or all day indirect/filtered light. Protected from the hot mid-day sun.

Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining slightly acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.

Maintenance: Selective pruning as needed, can be done during winter up until early August.

There seems to be a bit of confusion in the name, J. D. Vertrees list’s based on our description that the correct spelling should be ‘Marakumo’ with an ‘a’ not ‘u’. As they describe ‘Murakumo’ as a red variety. However, our growers and many other reputable online sites dis-regard this. In any case, the plant we are selling is the white variegated one, not the red.
