Japanese Maple - Purple of the East

An old cultivated variety of Japanese Maple with unusual red tones to the large deeply toothed margin leaves. The leaves flush out yellow-orange in spring maturing to red with a green undertone. By summer, the leaves become a deeper green with reddish highlights. Fall colour changes to a bright red. Grows 8′ high by 4′ wide in 10 years.

Parentage unknown. Listed in the 1882 Sekihin Binran.

Special Notes

Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun or all day indirect/filtered light.

Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining slightly acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.

Maintenance: Selective pruning as needed, can be done during winter up until early August.
