Acer palmatum ‘Akaji nishiki’

Japanese Maple - Red Brocade

A dwarf Japanese Maple with characteristics similar to ‘Deshojo’. Spring foliage emerges a bright pinkish-red and fades to green for the summer. Up-close the foliage is lightly speckled in variegation. During the summer a second flush of new pinkish-red foliage appears. During the fall, foliage changes to orange and red. Grows 4-6′ high by 2-4′ wide in a 10 year period.

Special Notes

Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun or all day indirect/filtered light.

Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining slightly acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.

Maintenance: Selective pruning as needed, can be done during winter up until early August.

Group: Matsumurae

This variety is sometimes considered identical to ‘Seigai’ and ‘Bonfire’ as indicated in Vertrees but many sources dispute this claim. Though they are very similar.
