Yes, Canadians can grow Bamboo! We are pleased to offer these hard to find and often sought after plants to the public to help bring a taste of the tropics home.
If you have never grown Bamboo before, the following would be of interest:
- Bamboo take about 3 years to get established once planted so it won’t be till the third year when they reach their potential seasonal height. If you start with a larger size, 5 gallon or 10 gallon this can speed it up a bit.
- Bamboo seasonal height is dependent on our winter and spring temperatures where a nice mild winter coupled with a very warm spring will allow Bamboo to grow higher but the opposite is also possible. On average, once established you would expect most varieties of clumping bamboos to reach on average 10’-12’H in a season (aside from
Fargesia rufa which grows 6-8’H). Spreading Bamboos can reach on average between 15-18’H once established.
- Bamboo requires a lot of heat to shoot new culms in the spring and you typically won’t see new growth till around mid-June, however, once new shoots do start to emerge they grow very fast and reach their seasonal height in 4-6 weeks.
- Bamboo is considered semi-evergreen in our climate meaning that if the winter is mild enough it has the potential of retaining their leaves and re-leafing out on the same culms next spring. However, if the winter is more harsh, they will shed their leaves and just shoot from the ground the following year.
