An elepidote, medium growing Rhododendron. 2 1/4″ to 3″ wide wavy flowers are dark, vivid reddish-purple with a dark purple flare. Blooms late midseason in trusses of 15-20 flowers. Grows 4′ high and wide in a 10 year period.

Origin

Parentage unknown. Bred before 1960 by Wojnar. Introduced by Dr. Gustav Melquist of Connecticut in 1990.

Special Notes

Exposure: Morning Sun, afternoon shade or all day filtered light. Protect from the hot mid-day sun. Protect from the prevailing winter winds, plant in a sheltered location.

Soil: A very acidic, moist but well draining soil is required. Avoid heavy compacted soils such as clay.

Maintenance: Selective pruning right after flowering in done. Dead-heading is recommended for increased flower production the following year.
