Alcock's Spruce - Howell's Dwarf
A dwarf Alcock’s Spruce with flat top and spreading ascending branches. Two tone needles are green on top and silvery-blue undersides with a hint of yellow on the most exposed areas. Loaded with small purple-red cones in the spring. Globe when young, eventually taking on a globose-pyramidal shape with age. Grows 2′ high by 4′ wide in a 10 year period.

Origin
Parentage unknown. Original seedling selected by Skylands Nursery, New Jersey. Introduced by John Vermeulen and Son Nursery, New Jersey before 1979. Originally named 'Howell's Tigertail' but renamed to avoid confusion with the Tigertail Spruce (Picea torano).

Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun.
Soil: Adaptable to various soils. Prefers slightly acidic soils.
Maintenance: Selective pruning as needed from spring to July.
Group: Dwarf
Now considered to be under the species Picea jezoensis (Yezo Spruce).
