Acer palmatum ‘Taimen nishiki’
Japanese Maple - Brocade of the Ming Dynasty
A rare Japanese Maple which has the potential of being stunning and variegated but is also very prone to reversion. New spring foliage emerges bright red. As the leaves mature to dark purplish-red, patches of red, pink and white can be seen. Each leaf can vary dramatically in the amount of variegation occurring. Fall foliage is a brilliant scarlet. Grows 5-6′ high by 3′ wide in a 10 year period.

Parentage unknown. Listed in Japan since 1882.

Special Notes
Exposure: Part Sun or all day indirect/filtered light. Protected from the hot mid-day sun.
Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining slightly acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.
Maintenance: Selective pruning as needed, can be done during winter up until early August. If an odd shoot is seen as a straight purple it is recommend to trim it out as this can lead to total reversion of the plant.
