Acer palmatum ‘O jishi’

Japanese Maple - Male Lion

A smaller, more compact version of ‘Shishigashira’ being half of the traditional size with leaves becoming a bit more flat as they mature. Closely conjested crinkly leaves emerge light green with a brown tip in the spring maturing to a deep green by summer. The foliage transitions to a yellow -orange colour in the fall. Grows 5′ high by 4′ wide in a 10 year period.

Parentage unknown. Listed in Japan in the 1700's.

Special Notes

Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun or all day indirect/filtered light.

Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining slightly acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.

Maintenance: Selective pruning as needed, can be done during winter up until early August.
